While in residence, Tom Dean produced Fear of Blue, a single-channel video work that ruminates on the personal sensations, perceptions, and associations with the colour blue.The fifty-four-minute video shows different views of Vancouver’s surroundings and skylines, accompanied by voiceover narration by Susan Smythe and music. The soundtrack features original recordings by Hank Williams, vocals by Mark Rodden and Pearl, violin by Steve Saba, steel guitar by Pat Gerow, piano by Hank Bull, and yodelling by Evan Kemp.
