Description:

For twenty-four hours beginning at noon on Sep 27, 1982, the city of Linz, Austria began a non-stop series of dialogues with over twenty correspondents around the world. Following the sun, each country corresponded with Linz at noon local time for one or more hours of exchange.

The technology in use included the I.P. sharp computer timesharing network, whereby text messages were traded in a live conference format; telefax, whereby an image on paper was transmitted by telephone; and slowscan television, whereby still video images were exchanged via telephone

Western Front commissioned artists to design original work especially for transmission and produced a videotape to explore the possibilities and implications of the use of these media by artists.

The project was conceived by Robert Adrian X as part of the Ars Electronica festival of art, technology, and society in Linz, Austria.

Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
