Description:
A Space hosted Western Front artists for a residency in which they presented a month of events, performances, screenings, talks, and readings at the Toronto artist-run-centre that built upon works previously developed in Vancouver.
While at A Space, Eric Metcalfe and Kate Craig reprised Spots Before Your Eyes—an exhibition of clothing, videos, works on paper, and other ephemera from their leopard print collection. These materials were further activated by a cabaret event titled Nite Spots, featuring performances by Dr. Brute and the Brute Saxes, Hank Bull on piano, and songs by The Ettes.
Glenn Lewis shared a selection of illustrated documents from the New York Corres Sponge Dance School of Vancouver; hosted an evening of readings from his script Mondo Artie; and presented the performance work Chinese Rice Garden, which culminated in a dinner party with musical entertainment.
Martin Bartlett presented an evening of music and readings that featured his performance work One Piece for Everyone.
Other events included a radio play by the Lux Radio Players titled Murder in the Fog, and screenings of video work from Western Front’s archive.
Throughout the month, Western Front members reconnected with Toronto-based artists and organizers including Granada Venne, Pascal, Dianne Roblin, and The Hummer Sisters, among others—strengthening convivial networks of artistic exchange and collaboration.
Western Front is a non-profit artist-run centre in Vancouver.
