Western Front presented a reading by local writers in support of the poetry collective Grupo Apante based in Matagalpa, Nicaragua.
Grupo Apante was founded in 1983, and takes its name from a mountain overlooking Matagalpa—the mountain of water. Its aims were not only to improve the quality of its own members’ work, but also to encourage the active participation of the community at large in cultural efforts, such as readings, workshops, writing contests, and publications.
The reading in the Grand Luxe Hall featured George Bowering, Deanna Ferguson, Gerry GIlbert, Goh Poh Seng, Lionel Kearns, Lindsay Kenyon, Catriona Strang, Alfonso Quijada Urías, and Victoria Walker. The evening also included translations of recent work by members of Grupo Apante.
Proceeds from the event went towards the publication of an anthology representative of the last fifty years of writing in Matagalpa and the surrounding region.
