Inglish: Writing with an Accent was a two-day program of readings and talks on writing, ethnicity, gender, racism, and subjectivity by immigrant and Canadian-born writers from diverse backgrounds. The program sought to challenge the assumption that language is a neutral medium of expression and articulation, and addressed the implications of English as the language of dominance for writers who work outside of mainstream expectations.
Inglish: Writing with an Accent featured readings and presentations by Marie Annharte Baker, Ayanna Black, Jam Ismail, Smaro Kamboureli, Robert Kroetsch, Ashok Mathur, Aruna Srivastava, Aritha van Herk, Fred Wah, and Betsy Warland.
Presented in partnership with West Coast Line, with support from the English Department at Simon Fraser University, the Canada Council, absinthe magazine, and the Kootenay School of Writing.
