Description:

Inglish: Writing with an Accent was a two-day program of readings and talks on writing, ethnicity, gender, racism, and subjectivity by immigrant and Canadian-born writers from diverse backgrounds. The program sought to challenge the assumption that language is a neutral medium of expression and articulation, and addressed the implications of English as the language of dominance for writers who work outside of mainstream expectations.

The second day of the program began with a morning workshop and discussion for fifty participants moderated by Fred Wah, with Marie Annharte Baker, Ayanna Black, Robert Kroetsch, Jam Ishmail, Smaro Kamboureli, Ashok Mathur, Aruna Srivastava, Aritha van Herk, and Betsy Warland. Later that evening, Inglish concluded with a reading by Ayanna Black, Smaro Kamboureli, Betsy Warland, and workshop attendees.

Presented in partnership with West Coast Line, with support from the English Department at Simon Fraser University, the Canada Council, absinthe magazine, and the Kootenay School of Writing.
