GATEways was an international network art event held on March 21 on the occasion of the spring equinox and the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It was organized by Alien Productions and Western Front participated as one of the streaming sites.
The project linked web-based and radio broadcasts from Belgrade, Weimar, Melbourne, Vienna, and Vancouver, with an additional site-based performance and sound installation in Vienna.
The shared artistic program unfolded across time zones, beginning at sunrise to sunset in each location and engaged the equinox as a moment when day and night come into equal balance across much of the world.
In Vancouver, Rosmarie Heimbach, Richard Thacker, and Jean Routhier transmitted video footage of sunsets. Axel Mittendorf, Cheryl Hutchinson, Chris Kukura, Luke Meat, Masa Anzai, Fiona Bowie, Jean Routhier, and E. Kage contributed soundscapes to a RealAudio stream.
GATEways was a part of WIENCOUVER 2000, a series of projects focused on exchange and telematic art between artists in Vancouver and Vienna.
