Jul 8, 2022
Field:

Talk

Location:

Grand Luxe Hall, Western Front

Time:

7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Description:

An open discussion with Darius Jones and Amirtha Kidambi about their collaborative project, Angels and Demons, for which they perform musical adaptations of cosmological writings by iconic composer and bandleader Sun Ra. The artists invited the public to witness their process of adaptation, which includes speaking to the questions “why Sun Ra?” and “why his poetry and philosophical writing?” Jones and Kidambi also welcomed the audience to actively participate by sharing their own experiences of and interest in Sun Ra. The discussion included readings of Ra’s poems “I Am Strange” and “Not a Myth.” Ra’s feature-length film Space is the Place (1972) and Robert Mugge’s documentary Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise (1980) were simultaneously presented without sound as a visual background to the event.
