Mona Hatoum’s twenty-five-minute video Changing Parts delves into her personal experience of the Lebanese Civil War while living abroad, capturing the complexities of being distant from one’s family and homeland during a time of war. Hatoum intercuts domestic scenes from her family home in Beirut with documentation of her performance Under Siege (1982) at the London Film Makers’ Co-op, where she struggles inside a polyethylene-walled container with a floor covered in mud. Nude and unable to stand due to the sloping sides, she leaves streaks of mud across the surface as she attempts to rise.
