Description:
While in residence at Western Front, Shana Moulton developed and performed Detached Inner Eye, a new work produced as part of her ongoing video and performance series Whispering Pines (2002–).
Detached Inner Eye centres Cynthia, Moulton’s alter ego, as she traverses commodified forms of new age mysticism, beauty, and domesticity through rituals that are at once banal and uncanny. Produced for the Grand Luxe Hall, the twenty-minute performance combined choreography, original songs, animation, and projected video that parodied television advertisements for self-improvement products. With props including turquoise dumbbells, pink inflatable hemorrhoid cushions, and sheet masks clipped to circular laundry hangers dangling from the ceiling, Detached Inner Eye offered a non-linear narrative exploring the hypochondriac anxieties of achieving self-fulfillment within a capitalist society.
Moulton’s presentation of Detached Inner Eye was preceded by a screening of a selection of video works.
Video documentation of this event is available upon request.
