Description:

Developed by Jeff Mann, TV Freenet was a live, online open-source video mixing network that presented a way to realize collaborative multimedia productions. The project used low-power pirate television transmitters and ISDN videoconferencing as a way to envision alternatives to corporate broadcasting.

Over the course of his residency at Western Front, Mann invited the public to contribute to the network by bringing in video tapes, computer graphics, animations, and sound elements. The final day of TV Freenet featured a live “jam session” with a collaborative collage of elements downloaded from the internet, and a conference call made between Western Front, the Centre for Image and Sound Research (CISR) in Vancouver, and the McLuhan Programme in Toronto.

Video documentation is available upon request.
